How to reply to a negative comment

Every author gets criticism and rudeness in the comments. Here is a simple routine that helps you neither snap nor stay silent, and how Chorusly helps with it.

First work out what you are looking at

Fair criticism, personal frustration, provocation and spam need different replies.

  • Fair criticism: thank them and answer on the substance.
  • Frustration: acknowledge the feeling and offer a solution.
  • Provocation: answer briefly and calmly, or don’t answer.
  • Spam: don’t answer, remove it under your channel’s rules.

The order of a reply

Wait a few minutes if the comment stung. The first impulse is rarely the best one.

Start with the main thing: what you heard. Then answer on the substance, without excuses or sarcasm.

If the conversation drifts, offer to continue in private messages.

What is better not to do

  • Don’t delete criticism without a reason: other readers see that.
  • Don’t reply with a template: people notice at once.
  • Don’t argue for the last word.

How Chorusly helps

Chorusly puts comments with complaints and questions above the rest and says why they matter. Each comes with three reply drafts in different tones.

You pick a draft, edit it and send it yourself. A reply goes out only after your tap, and after it you still have 5 seconds to cancel. The AI can be wrong, so in sharp cases read the text carefully.

Where to start
